Don’t Let Perfection Hold You Back

I’ve been on two panels this week talking about minorities in cannabis and social equity programs, and it got me thinking about all these kick ass women I was on the panel with. Out there, making real changes in the industry, big moves- creating companies, promoting companies. Changing the world for people who need it most, making the world a just and right place.

It got me thinking about why there aren’t more women out there doing this, founding companies and putting themselves out there more?

Growing up in Humboldt County, I didn’t know any interior designers- there wasn’t anyone out there doing what I wanted to do. Nobody role modeling to me what my life could be if I stretched myself just a little bit more. I didn’t see anyone in my life doing what I wanted to do. I was pretty sure I’d be a housewife. I always had a feel and talent for interior design, but that just wasn’t the thing happening where I grew up.

Later on, I thought -well maybe I could be one of those interior designers on HGTV? How does one even go about doing that? I actually made a list of all the things I thought I needed to do to become a designer on tv. Lose weight, get braces, hair right, skin fixed, new wardrobe, new car, the works. I had no idea how I was going to do all those things, but I did feel that I was unworthy of the attention of others unless I changed pretty much everything about myself.

^ This is me on the peloton during a FB live with my WHLIW group – showing up imperfectly.

Sometimes I see other women I am coaching or in my friend circles saying ”Well, I can’t go out and get what I want until XYZ happens.”

Whether it’s getting married, losing weight, whatever the right thing is…. It will always be that elusive something holding us back. Telling yourself and others that you aren’t ready or you aren’t enough. We add this perfection pressure to ourselves in many aspects of our lives.

I want to tell you, you are ready NOW. Right now with your gifts and talents and everything you bring to the table. Please don’t wait until you think you’re “really” ready, until everything is perfect. The world needs what’s inside of you NOW. Don’t wait. Go after your goals. Go out and get it. The only regret you will have is that you didn’t start sooner.
